이 글은 신채호가 구상한 근대적 사회공동체 모색의 양상과 그 시대적 의미를 정리하고 평가하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 그 시각의 중심은 사회진화론의 극복과 민족의식의 전환이다. 신채호는 사회진화론을 자강의 차원에서 수용했다. 양계초가 수용한 사회진화론은 한국의 지식인들에게 지대한영향을 주었으나 신채호는 중국의 지식인들과 달랐다. 그는 한국의 특색을바탕으로 우리 민족국가의 수립을 전망했다. 그 추세는 1920년대 전과 후로 나눌 수 있다. 이 논문은 신채호의 공동체 구상에서 그가 보여준 여러복합적 모습들에 대한 종합적 평가이다. 그래서 그의 사상의 핵심 개념인민족과 민중에 대해 설명하고, 또 1900~1920년대의 민족주의, 제국주의, 근대국가, 아나키즘을 다룬다. 결국 이 논문은 신채호가 사회진화론에 대응한 모습과 그가 민족과 민중을 시대에 따라 어떻게 이해했는지를 잘 보여줄 것이다. 한국의 식민지 시기 한 지식인의 변화무쌍하지만 일관된 내재성의 한 모습을 살펴보려 한다.
The purpose of this article is to summarize the aspects of the search for a modern social community envisioned by Shin Chaeho and evaluate the meaning of the theory. The center of that view is the overcoming of Social Darwinism and the transformation of National identity. Shin Chaeho embraced Social Darwinism at the level of national strenuous efforts. Korean intellectuals were greatly influenced by Social Darwinism accepted by Yanggye-cho, as did Shin Chaeho. However, Shin Chaeho was different from the Chinese intellectuals. He predicted the establishment of our nation-state based on the characteristics of Korea. The trend can be divided into before and after the 1920s. This thesis is a comprehensive evaluation of Shin Chaeho’s various complex features in his community concept. So, he explains the core concepts of his ideology, the nation and the people, and deals with nationalism, imperialism, modern state, and anarchism of the 1900s and 1920s. In the end, this thesis will show how Shin Chaeho responded to Social Darwinism and how he understood the nation and the people according to the times. Let’s take a look at the ever-changing but consistent immanence of an intellectual during the colonial period in Korea.
